T420/T420s

Sorry if this has been posted before. I'm so close to pulling the trigger but just can't decide on the T420 or T420s. I'm really liking the lighter and thinner design of the T420s. The battery though, concerns me.



I think the T420 can pull off 6 hours on the 6-cell no problem. But I'm not so sure about the T420s. Anyone know battery life of the T420s?

On this video, the reviewer state that the battery life of the T420s is around 3 1/2 hrs, that is an real world usage scenario and high brightness setting.

If you like the T420s so much, get it and bring both the notebook and the power adapter with you in your bag. I'm being totally serious.



Realistically, on average, T420s 6-cell pulls 4 hours. T420s 6-cell plus 3-cell pulls 6 hours, T420 6-cell pulls 6 hours, T420 9-cell pulls 9 hours.

If battery life is your deciding factor, it seems the decision is made if the T420s doesn't support the battery life you need.



The T420 is a mainstream machine and from all of the reviews so far it well built and a smart choice.

Simplest solution is to buy an extra 6-cell battery and throw that in your bag. Those batteries hardly weigh anything. The T420s though doesn't nearly have an edge on the T420 in weight (and maybe also thickness) like the T410s did against the T410.

I've been in the same situation for the past week or so, and the argument that finally persuaded me to go with the T420 (though I've yet to actually place the order) was this. Low weight (i.e. T420s) wins if what you typically do is carry the computer around between a number of fixed locations (e.g. home, office, client's office) where you can strategically place chargers. Long battery life (i.e. T420) wins if what you typically do is carry the computer around between different locations where you may or may not have access to a power outlet, including places like airports and trains. My use profile is more along the lines of the latter.



It should be said, though, that it is with a tinge of regret that I turn away from the T420s. It is one sexy machine...

I've done the power adapter deal before with other machines. It's disadvantage is two fold:



-It's a hassle dealing with the long cord and takes about a lot of space compared to a slim T420s battery.

-Once the battery is dead you're tied to an outlet until it charges. With a second battery you just put that in are good to go.

hi all





I just picked up the Toshiba satellite c655-s5121 laptop 15.6" 250gb hd from offfice max for 300 bucks. I was wondering what everyone thought of this. I still have it in the box....I was going to buy the toshiba netbook nb505 for 280 when this deal came along....



I miss an hdmi connection, but the reality is the netbook wouldn't have had one either.



What do you think about this machine???? I see virtually no reviews online!

I think the saying goes, "you get what you pay for".

I would consider it a low end machine, but still a great pickup if it fulfills your needs.



I did look up the specs and it's a single core Intel Celeron CPU (1 core, 1 thread). Comes with a decent amount of HDD space but lacking on RAM as it is only 2 GB (easy upgrade). Overall, not bad for $300; nice pickup.

my plans are to play video from the net, maybe run a video like a dvd once and a while,



also run word while running a web browser to complete job applications



Will this thing do the trick????

My assumption was if the netbook would do it why wouldn't this.

Need someone to tell me the service tag number under his laptop... urgently

I am considering purchasing an L502X online from the Dell USA site, but I will have to order a Turkish keyboard separately since Dell USA cannot install one and it doesn't look like L502X will become available in Turkey soon.



A friend who works for a company that used to be the Dell distributor in Turkey said he could contact the USA warehouse that makes these keyboards and see if a Turkish keyboard is available for L502X, but what he needs to know is the service-tag number located under the L502X. The problem is I don't own an L502X yet: I will purchase it if there's a Turkish keyboard available for it.



Would anyone here be so kind to tell me his/her service-tag number?



The warehouse wants to know the service-tag number; somehow the model code (L502X) is not enough for them to be able to give us the information we need.



Maybe the service-tag number pattern would be enough, too. I mean someone could tell me his number but make up the last digit or digits.



So anybody could help me with that?

They might just need the part number for the US version of the backlit keyboard? Which is 331-1668.

F series charge problem

Hi, i purchased a VAIO F-Series laptop last september from sony center (UK), got it home fired it up everything was working fine apart from the charge socket, when i plugged the charger in it was a bit wobbly but i just dismissed it, but now it seems the socket has a little crack on it and the wobble has got worse and the pin on the charger sometimes gets really hot to the point where i cant touch it, plus it will only charge if i move it around to a certian position.



So who do i contact to get this fixed, the store or sony customer services and will it get fixed under warranty?



Help is much appreciated.

Call Sony customer service. It should be covered under warranty unless they have some reason to think you dropped it or caused the damage yourself.

HP Officejet 6500 All-in-One printer

I would appreciate any information, good and bad, about the HP Officejet 6500 All-in-One printer. It is currently available for $99.00 which seems to be an outstanding price for what HP claims it can do. I have read some reviews and they are knocking the wireless part of the printer, an option I will not be using so not too interested in those problems. Some reviewers were knocking the scanner, that after scanning they couldn't print. Also, some had problems installing the Windows 7 driver. Printer is rated at 3.5 to 4.0 out of 5 stars. I print 4x6 color photos on occasion but not frequently but I still want quality color prints. I like the idea of easy copying of documents so I like the copy feature. Incidentally, I will be replacing an older HP 7550 printer that for Windows 7 requires a driver for the HP 5500 printer. This was OK but the printer is now totally broken and must be replaced. Sorry for rambling on.

Again, any comments will be appreciated........Ralph

I was hoping for some input so am a little disappointed in no replies. If someone should check my post, would you know if this printer has ICC profiles so I don't have to use the printer's color management. I downloaded the manual and it doesn't specifically indicate anything about color management.

I purchased an HP Officejet 6500 recently and although the fax/copier and b/w document print-outs are of good quality, I am having major problems with accurate colors. My previous color printer was a small Lexmark and although the print quality was not as good, The colors were much more accurate.

I recently bought one to use both on my Mac and PC running Windows 7. It runs beautifully on my Mac, but it will not scan to my PC. I've spent literally hours with different tech support agents until finally one told me I'd have to talk to a "level 2" tech support agent and to call back. When I did I was put on hold for 51 minutes (confirmed on my cell phone)then cut off. I called back, waited another 20 minutes and was told they would "have to exhaust all possibilities" before getting me to a level 2 agent. When I asked how many people I'd have to talk to before all possibilities were exhausted I was told that a level 2 agent would call me back. Don't know if this will ever be resolved (my computer doesn't detect the scanner), but with tech support so bad, I wouldn't recommend it for a PC.

We have an Officejet 6500 and it prints very slow! If you print from Quickbooks you will have problems. Right now it prints about 2 pages per minute. Don't expect good tech support

T61 hinges

I just got a T61p, and has anyone replaced the hinges in a T61 before?



My main question is that i buy some new hinges (like off ebay or somewhere) will these be better than the original ones or will they start the crap out and get some play in them like how they are now?



Coming from a T43, then handling multiple T60s, the build quality of the T61 came as a bit of a shocker.

I think you're either easily shocked, or trying for dramatic effect - because I also went from a T43 to a T61 without noticing anything with the hinges (or in fact the build quality overall).

Other things i noticed, the keyboard does not feel as solid on the left side, in fact it actually sounds hollow if you hit the keys right.



Also with the display, there is noticeable backlight bleed at the bottom with dark backgrounds that stands out over the rest of the screen...this is on the 1920x1200 display.



Also on the right palm rest, there is a gap between the plastic and whatever is underneath which sometimes causes a tapping noise.



The T60 and and T43 were perfect, i just didn't see that in the T61p.

Personally speaking the hinge quality is actually better on the T6x than on the T4x.



I would recommend you get the new hinge from IBM parts, they only cost slightly more than the ebay ones, but you do get the assurance of it been a new part rather than a used part or used part passed off as refurbished one.



Given the price drop coming from T4x to T6x laptops, there are also more people purchasing it, which drives up the no. of Thinkpads in circulation.



Finally, the T6x hinges are made by the same two companies as the T4x hinges, which are Reel and KATO.



Regarding keyboard, the only difference between the T4x keyboard and T6x keyboards are the key feel, but i haven't experienced any hollow sound effect. But what you said could occur since there is more room under the T61p 15.4 inch keyboard for better air circulation, and if you hit the key right you can set up a resonance frequency to give that hollow sound.

thanks, yea i was kinda leery on getting parts from ebay, I'll check them out on lenovo's site.

After viewing that YouTube video on the T61 hinge "wiggle", mine also wiggles, but not THAT bad. It has about a 1" of "play" in the screen.



Funny, because my X301 has NO play on the hinges. (Then again, it also cost 3X as much lol).

Yea mine has quite a bit of play in it (like the youtube vid). I have recently bought:



2 T60s w/ 15" wide

2 more T60s w/ 14" 4:3

1 T61p w/ 15" wide



and I have my T43 w/ 14" 4:3



The only one that has any play is the T61p



All of the others are tight and perfect.

I saw a thread where the new xps gpu look like they are glued but not soldered? So can anyone confirm it is not soldered. If its not we can upgrade it in the future.

The thread states in short regardless of if there is glue they are also soldered, hence the electrical connection or at the least glue would be harder to remove.

Neither the GPU or CPU are individually upgradable.

There isn't two hard drive caddys in the 15" as standard. There is in the 17".



You can replace the optical drive with another hard drive and run the optical drive from the eSata/USB port with a cable and caddy.

Cheers for the rep There are people on here that have taken their l502 apart but I don't think anyone's really documented it. Internally they are more or less identical to the l501 from the sound of it and looking at the service manuals.

I'm still waiting for mine to arrive, getting real impatient.
