Cf-29 Screen ID

Hi Guys!

Well the CF-29 Touchscreen I rashy bought turned up. Need to split the LCD toget to the screen so I could hook it up to the CF-74. The bad news is looks like it is not a TS! The potentially good news is that it has the exact LCD that I was looking for! The TMX133XGA0301-01. So subject to the LCD working, I might be able to achieve my goal of a functioning CF-74.

So just to check. There is no TS PCB on the LCD although the cable is there. The other side of the LCD is just a plastic panel the outside of which is quite badly discoloured with a sort of blue tint. Some pics below.

As I have paid a premium for a TS, I will have to get back to the seller to re-negotiate the deal. So can some one cast an experienced eye over the pics and confirm that it is indeed an ordinary non-TS screen assembly that I have.

Cheers!

Reply 1 : Cf-29 Screen ID

It looks like a non touch to me.

Reply 2 : Cf-29 Screen ID

Yep, does look that way! No TS PCB and no glass panel with the connector = non touchscreen! Actually, the plastic panel on the bezel has a purplish tint to it when reflecting light. Some antiglare coating perhaps. Seems to be badly scratched.

The screen looked mint. I carefully hooked it up using the original cable from the CF-74 and the inverter. The backlight came on and is adjustable in brightness but no Bios screen or the Panasonic blue screen or the Setup white screen when pressing F2. To eliminate the connections I reconnected the old damaged screen and can see in the corner that it displays the black Bios screen, the Panasonic blue screen can also be seen and pressing F2 brings up the white Setup screen. The computer displays on an external monitor.

I don't think its possible to hook the cables up incorrectly and they were the same for both screens. Is it possible for a screen not to display due to a fault in the LCD itself?

Not having much luck am I?

Reply 3 : Cf-29 Screen ID

Oh well, after a quick search it does look like I have the infamous "white screen" indictative of a faulty LCD. Hopefully the other screen I bought might be able to display so that I can confidently rule out the computer and the connections. Nads!

Reply 4 : Cf-29 Screen ID

Non-touch.

PC connected to 2 modems but setup to get internet from one?

Can I have my PC connected to two modem/routers at the same time (motherboard offers 2 LAN ports) but only setup so that it connects to the internet through one of them?

The reason is the following: I have 2 DSL lines, and 2 modem/routers.

I want to have one DSL providing access to the internet to my desktop PC (through modem/router 1), and the second DSL line providing internet to laptop, PS3 and other secondary devices (through modem/router 2).

However, I still want to have everything connected in a home network, so in order to do that I need to have my desktop PC also connected to the modem/router 2.

How can I do that?

I am running Windows 7 x64.

Thanks!

Reply 1 : PC connected to 2 modems but setup to get internet from one?

So if I read this right
Desktop will ONLY go to internet via router 1
Other machines will ONLY go to internet via router 2
Desktop needs access to just the devices attached to router 2 and nothing past it.

First you need different subnets for your 2 routers. Ie 192.168.1.0/24 and 192.168.2.0/24... or whatever you like.

Everything is setup pretty much standard except your connection on desktop to router 2. On this network interface you want to use a hard coded IP from the subnet assigned to router 2. Do not set the default gateway or the DNS on that interface. Your machine will have 2 ip addresses one on each subnet. Since there is only a single default route it will use that to go to internet but is smart enough to know based on the subnet mask that it can talk directly to your other machines.

If you issue the ROUTE PRINT command from the cmd line you should see both network.

You may have to set options in the bios on some motherboards to allow both to be active at the same time.

If your question is the more standard one we see here of how to actually use 2 internet connections from a single machine that answer is that it is very hard to get to work effectively.

Thank you, that was exactly what I was looking for happy

Network Interference Error Message

I recently purchased a LN55C650 LCD and picked up a WIS09ABGN wireless dongle at Fry's. Setup went smoothly and watched streaming movies on Netflix. Now every time I turn on the TV and try to access the internet I get a "network interference" error. Since going through the setup again clears the error, I do not think it is a router signal strength problem. Lap tops work fine in the same room too. Going through the setup to watch a movie is a PITA. Seems to be a lot of theories about this problem but can anyone tell me the nature of this error? Is the probelm with the TV? Dongle? Software or firmware? Wireless singnal or setting?

Reply 1 : Network Interference Error Message

Given just this to work with I'd have to write that you need to call up the folk that manage your home network and internet connections.

But you can start at the CNET Networking Forum and the note we have there for Samsung owners at http://forums.cnet.com/7723-7589_102-378511.html?tag=threadListing;forum-threads

Reply 2 : Network Interference Error Message

This is a ridiculous problem the Samsung televisions have when they have their own internet connections. It takes them forever to log onto the network and they get disconnected incredibly often. It's a big problem.

Reply 3 : Network Interference Error Message

That the makers also configure your internet connections and validate same. For now this is not inside their support area.

Consumers don't care about that but for now, this is how it is.

Lenovo X220 Topseller Codes

I have been doing some pricing on Lenovo thinkpad X220 and for the life of me can't find any X220 Topseller codes that include the IPS display.

I can find plenty of them for the x220t and the pricing is quite reasonable. I dont really need or desire a tablet.

Can anyone in the know tell me what the outdoor screen actual means. Does that mean the screen is not a touch/pen screen?

The outdoor display does not support multitouch (no touch). Digitizer only. The outdoor display on the X201T was 400 nits bright and had a 500-1 contrast ratio. For some reason, I think the new one is 350 nits but don't quote me on that.

Reply 2 : Lenovo X220 Topseller Codes

There aren't any current topseller models with IPS unfortunately. The ones that do have IPS is ridiculously overpriced compared to CTO.

Reply 3 : Lenovo X220 Topseller Codes

Yeah its kind of ridiculous. A x220 tablet with IPS is less expensive than x220 simply because the tablet has a topseller code.

I should also add that I use linux and I have not assessed the tablet compatibility yet.

Outdoor = Pen and maybe a little nicer looking screen (need side by side in people's hands to confirm)

Multi = Pen and Fingers

is what it boils down to. Go with what you would use and best price.

Does anybody know if both the outdoor and multi touch have the graininess issue or just the multitouch.

Aluminium, when you get your laptop could you do me a big favour and see if ubuntu live cd/usb boots up and whether the pen and other features work?

I only ask cause you have an N900 with linux so Im assuming your linux literate.

By the time I get it 11.04 should be out, so I suspect all the sandybridge stuff will be fine. I'll probably be running linux mostly in VMs on this one though, since I want to abuse the expresscard port for a gpu dock.

Just got XPS 15 spacebar makes noise

Hey

Just got XPS 15 spacebar makes noise, dont know how to explain it but you know the sound it makes generally on old laptops when you press the spacebar.....maybe its kind of loose?

Other keys are sold and dont make noise when pressed....

Someone else have this problem?

Reply 1 : Just got XPS 15 spacebar makes noise

My XPS 17 (L702x) has the same issue, the spacebar is something that really clicks the other keys have a soft click

Reply 2 : Just got XPS 15 spacebar makes noise

I think it has to do with the mechanism that allows the full key length to depress when just one finger is pressing down on one side. Typically there's a metal brace, and its probably the sound of this brace hitting the base.

Reply 3 : Just got XPS 15 spacebar makes noise

put a small piece of paper between the key and the base. It helps a lot

Asus G71GX HD Help

I've had my Asus G71GX for almost exactly a year, I bought it recertified off of NewEgg. Yesterday when I woke up I could no longer get Windows 7 64x Ultimate to boot. I've tried multiple things (repairing, reinstalling, loading previous states), but everything ends up taking 100 times longer than you would expect it to (once I get to the Windows 7 installation window, it literally takes a half hour to get to the next screen) and I set it to repair overnight, but when I woke up it was still processing, so I think I'm boned. I've come to the conclusion that my HD is borked. I tried to take out my HD but one of the screws is really stripped, my dad says he can take my laptop to work and use a tool to get it out. Even if this doesn't work, luckily the Asus G71GX has a 2nd HD port, which I can get access to. So I basically have 2 questions:

1. Is the HD likely the problem?

2. Assuming that, where can I get a replacement HD? I've read that I need a Asus brand clip or something in addition to any HD I get. I had planned on buying a SSD a year after getting my laptop anyway to supe it up a bit, so any links yall can provide to a good SSD would be greatly appreciated (120b min please).

Thanks!

Ok, I've found a SSD that is supposedly killer here: Newegg.com - OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD2-2VTXE120G 2.5" 120GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

On the page is says

Quote:

2.5" to 3.5" Adapter Included

The OCZ Vertex 2 Series is specifically designed for notebook computers coming in a 2.5-inch hard drive form factor. In addition, the installation kit includes a 2.5" to 3.5" bracket for matching with 3.5 drive bay to extend the storage of your desktop computer.

Does that mean I wouldn't need an Asus HD caddy? I believe I found the place to order them here:

Hard Drive Caddy

I'm basically ready to buy both of these but will wait for feedback from you guys to make sure I don't make a bad purchase. Thanks in advance.

You can get a Dell caddy that works for our units that is much less expensive.

If you want to stick with Asus OEM caddy, you can get that if you wish.

Time to get 1 caddy, a SSD and a new 7200 rpm hdd.

Asus extended warranty.

Hi all,

I'd like to ask if we could extend the warranty from 1 year to 3 years? The model I bought is from Amazon that come with only 1 year global warranty. Have anyone tried this before?

Best regards,

Dao.

Reply 1 : Asus extended warranty.

You will only be able to extend the warranty through a 3rd party. ASUS doesn't offer warranty extensions after the sale, you would have to have purchased it with the computer from a retailer that offers the retail warranty extension from ASUS.

Reply 2 : Asus extended warranty.

Thank you .

Reply 3 : Asus extended warranty.

Sorry, I don't agree with it, when you register for your product, you can see your warranted information and YOU CAN buy the extension directly from the ASUS there.

It is global warrantee, however this warrantee is nothing to do with your dealer or shop.

I don't think there are any power systems around the world that's outside of the 100-240V range (that being the whole point).

You'll just need an adaptor for the weird Israeli plug and you're away and rocking.

I have said this before, but I really like the IBM Lenovo AC/DC Combo Adaptor Model 22P9003! I originally got the idea from Capt. Dogfish. It is 72 Watts, with an AC input of 100-240V / 50-60 HZ or DC input of 13-18VDC. The output is a nice, Toughbook friendly, 16V 4.5A(Voltage/Current) and is great for when you are running the Toughbook out of the car!

It will fit the CF-29, CF-50 and others. I really like the idea of just one power brick. I scored a brand new, from the USA, one on eBay for $15 and free shipping. Many are sold without the DC cord, so pay close attention when shopping.

Here is the kit I out together out of an International Plug kit at my local Thrift Shop. I think that I paid $4. The DC Car cable is at the bottom and I also carry a USB extender for that problematic occluded side USB on the CF-29. This will allow me to power most anywhere. I am still looking for the power adapter cable used with the outlet on aircraft seats.

I will try and explain this in non-technical terms that most here can understand.

As I am sure that we can all agree, it is a well known fact that electricity can smell fear. As long as you show it you are the boss and will not be intimidated, I think that you will be OK.

Sometimes if it is being particularly vexing I will recite Ohm's Law as a kind of incantation and to demonstrate my superior knowledge of its essence. I find this as a particularly effective means of putting it in its place.

YMMV....

OP, I have that exact caddy, and I'm looking to sell it. If you want it, PM me and we can work out a price.

Swapping out the optical drive is pretty simple. You just need to make sure you have the right screwdrivers. Make sure you have size 00 and 000 screwdrivers as the screws to secure the hard drive to the caddy are very tiny and easy to misplace. Getting the ODD out of the system should just be a matter of removing one screw from the bottom of the chassis and gently removing it.

As said above, the process is pretty straight forward.

If you check my signature, you'll see that I don't actually have the system yet. The caddy I have is from my former MSI system. The part number is exactly the same so there should be no compatibility issues with the HP. You should have no trouble popping out the optical drive and simply putting the empty caddy in there. It's also designed to accommodate the original optical drive faceplate so you don't ruin the aesthetics of your machine. I'm selling mine because I don't need it any more.

Reply 6 : Is it possible to replace 2011 HP dv6t qe optical drive with HDD

If the part number is the same there shouldnt be a problem, considering that almost all optical drives share the same form factor, the only thing that is generally different is the screw layout.

If you want to play it safe go with newmodeus other wise you might get a deal from saturnotaku.

Should I ditch the dell warranty and go with squaretrade?

Hi all,

I'm thinking about getting a refund for my dell in home warranty service, and getting a square trade warranty. The drawback would be that if the dell breaks down in the first year I have to pay for shipping. On the other hand, Dell's customer service is pretty poor, and Squaretrade's is pretty great. Plus with square trade I would get accidental damage coverage for three years.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Claude

Reply 1 : Should I ditch the dell warranty and go with squaretrade?

Square trade kicks in after manufacturer warranty runs out. For first year you'll be using Dell's warranty service.

Reply 2 : Should I ditch the dell warranty and go with squaretrade?

On contrary, Dell's customer support is far superior to anyone else's. Try going to HP or Acer and then talk about poor customer support.

The problem with Squaretrade or any other 3rd party warranty is they only value their warranty for the value of the notebook. So if say you buy a 500 dollar laptop, and the motherboard goes bad outside Dell warranty and the motherboard replacement is 300. Then you have only 200 dollar left on your warranty. So should anything else happen they buy out your notebook and you get the remaining value.

Manufacturers will fix a notebook if there is genuinely a defect "unlimited" times. However many after 3-4 repairs they consider getting you a new unit.

But not all models are sold in the same countries. For example, in my country I cannot buy knight427's monster: the XT914UA. So it depends on user's country. Of course, tilhasbb can order an US model or even a finnish model (that would be very freak ), because warranty is international (save for a few countries, AFAIK), and then exchange the keyboard for the specific one for his country. But he (actually his company) still must pay international shipping, so I think his bosses won't agree

Just call them. We don't have access to a hidden stash of model numbers (at least I don't). You could also try their outlet if you are OK with a refurb. You'll have more options at least.

Also, 640M is a dual-core CPU. It can be faster at certain tasks due to it's higher clock speed, but the quad-cores will win out when doing multiple things or when using a program written to take advantage of multi-threading.

Here are the best two I found

XT970UA

No SSD

And

QP523US

No 1920x1080 screen

Keep looking, just a couple later gives QN407US or QQ261US which seem to fit your criteria.
(I assume you found the list in the part catalog. If you didn't find that list, I opened your last link in two tabs, then in one of the tabs, I set the country to Canada, explored the "hiearchy" tab, and found a list of model numbers with abbreviated components. Then one by one I copied each attractive model number to the "quick search" field in the other tab to see its details. Some SSDs might be listed with unusual drive sizes like 160 or 256, so that is a string to look for in the list.)

I assume using the country control in the parts list will list only the models that have been available in that country.
(Speculation: But I can imagine it might include models that were bought by a large special order, or might include models with service contracts in that country but were bought in the US.)

Of course, a popular or problematic model number may no longer be available.
(Speculation: For example, I imagine that could happen if HP bought the SSDs at bulk discount, and have run out of the SSDs, or the SSD manufacturer no longer makes the model that HP tested and approved, or the SSD was later found to have manufacturing problems. Or I can imagine an HP that only ships non-CTO models to your city in large crates to amortize customs, handling, and representatives' salaries and overhead, and doesn't expect enough orders to ship another large crate.)

I'd expect an HP representative to be able to get better information on whether unlisted models are currently (back-)orderable.
(Speculation: if one representative is intent on moving current stock that is already in country rather than back-ordering, you could try mentioning you are also considering a competing company notebook if this one is unavailable.)

Of course, a popular or problematic model number may no longer be available.

Sony Z11 : now more than 1 year, Happy birthday!

I remember in march 2010 when I asked you if I have to go with this model or not. This model was very expansive but very interresting too with his new new technology. (raid ssd, fast video card in small body, fiber carbon, etc.) and after we have z12, z13 that's only an update of this model.

But after 1 year of utilisation, what it's our opinion/experience/problem with it ?

For me, I really love it, It's my 5e laptop and I was very excited with it. I like the weight, the screen quality (brighter than my olders laptops) backlight keyboard, performance, etc. Last month, 2 weeks before the end of my waranty, I sent it to Sony to repair loose hinche and now I found my laptop run hotter than before.

I hope I'll not have other problem with it, at this price, it should be a good quality and have a long lifetime, I hope...

Other person want to talk about his Sony Z experience ?

And I want to know how many person got Sony care extended warranty ?

Reply 1 : Sony Z11 : now more than 1 year, Happy birthday!

Whoa, didn't realize that it is already one year since the VPC-Z series was first released!

Oh man, time does pass quickly.... & I'm one year older!?!?!

Reply 2 : Sony Z11 : now more than 1 year, Happy birthday!

Interested to see the comments. I know the saying goes, if their happy, they aren't on boards talking. However, I have become freaked out with the Z and it's longevity.

It seems to be negatively posted about lately on these boards. I have a new replacement Z on the way to replace my stolen Z I had for two months. I didint have it long enough to have issue.

Reply 3 : Sony Z11 : now more than 1 year, Happy birthday!

Had this baby only 8-9 months of the 1 year it's out. But I'm still very happy with it. Bought the docking about 6 months after i had it and the 9 cell battery about 7 months after.

Other than the ''fading palmrest'' issue everything is OK. Still an amazing 1080p screen, super fast ssd's and pretty good graphics performance.

Reply 4 : Sony Z11 : now more than 1 year, Happy birthday!

Quite happy I suppose. I've got the Z for the 5th month and it's pretty good so far. The main complaint I've got is the weak screen. Go test a MBA's screen and it's rock solid, even though it's just as thin as Z's screen (if not thinner). Of course when it comes to screen quality, the MBA is no match for the Z.

Reply 5 : Sony Z11 : now more than 1 year, Happy birthday!

You should send your Z in for evaluation. I have owned every version of the MBA, and none of those screens come close to my Z. The latest generation has lines (still) and is washed out compared to the lower resolution MBP.

Reply 6 : Sony Z11 : now more than 1 year, Happy birthday!

I bought the Z117GG the day it came out in HK over a year ago.

Used it for 10 months and then got a Z138GG.

I love the Z

Reply 7 : Sony Z11 : now more than 1 year, Happy birthday!

I still love my Z, got it June 25th last year.

Still want to do lots of mods and upgrades. But it is hard to find the time.

The Z is definitely my most favorite computer. It is by far the most versatile computer I have ever owned.

One thing that has really impressed me is that it has had the power and flexibility to do anything I've thrown at it. For example, I wasn't buying the Z with 3D Blu-ray in mind... but here I am 9 months later with a 3D DLP projector and everything works great.

I'm not quite sure what you meant. I did say the Z's screen is much better than the MBA/MBP series. Perhaps I interpreted your post wrongly?

Reply 9 : Sony Z11 : now more than 1 year, Happy birthday!

Keep in mind the MBP has contoured edges on the screen to make it appear thinner. May not be as thin as the Z's in reality, but not sure on that.

@computercowboy, I was always wondering when 3D projectors were going to be made. How exactly does the glasses setup work? You need some transmitter thing at the screen?

Roku box and IP conflict

For some reason as soon my roommate installed his Roku box I have been having IP conflicts on my laptop, and my laptop alone.

I cant figure out how to get them to work together, even after releasing and renewing my ip.

I have also made sure that my DHCP is enabled.

I am running two routers- one that has a modded DD-WRT, but I dont think thats an issue..

Any ideas?

Reply 1 : Roku box and IP conflict

Which OS and did you move to at least WPA?

Reply 2 : Roku box and IP conflict

I also see errors in the event log in admin tools.

Event 1001- your cpu was not assigned an address by the dhcp server.

Do I need to have dhcp activated? Why am I the only one with the problem? Shouldn't messing with my router settings affect all? Ths prob is unfixible. I also don't know what wps is...s

Reply 3 : Roku box and IP conflict

No the problem will not affect all. It will only hit the ones with the IP that the roku was handed out.

You wonder if someone tried to manually set the numbers in the roku.
Bob

Reply 4 : Roku box and IP conflict

After disconnecting it, I still had no luck!

Is there a way to check the roku settings? it just shows me the IP address listed. Doesn't give me any wireless options..

How do i make it so i stop getting this darn error!

Reply 5 : Roku box and IP conflict

I often change the SSID of the router. This forces new IPs to be handed out.

Then again if someone has hand assigned IP numbers and used one that is in the DHCP range, they created a problem. Fix? Don't do that!

I wonder about your ROKU. I can not check mine today. I just moved and I have my ROKU remote but we haven't found the roku unit. I'm left to guess you have not explored all menus.

As to the laptop, changing the SSID should help. If not, the OS may have been damaged by malware or registry cleaners.

-> I asked for which Windows OS and can't find an answer. This severely limits me since I can not write tcpip resets for all 5 versions.

running Windows XP. I will try the SSID switch... Doubt it will work... Just dont understand why its just MY computer having problems... Especially since nobody has a fixed IP - nobody in my apartment knows how to mess with that stuff... Any help would be greatly appreciated

About an IP conflict and now you write it freezes. That's two different issues unless you meant something else.

Review http://www.troublefixers.com/fixed-there-is-an-ip-address-conflict-with-another-system-on-the-network/ and then consider changing the DHCP range in the router.

Now that I know .14 is conflicting, we can change the DHCP range to .100 to .200

Samsung LED 7000 .MKV issues

I've been playing around with .MKV's on this TV and have run into a problem. It will play the sound and video but it can't seem to run the 'soft subs'. Translators sometimes add these to MKV files to help non-native speakers know what's going on and they can be switched on and off. Actually, I've seen some that have the various audio tracks as well. Anyway, every time I try to run one of these files, I cannot seem to find the option to run the subtitles. Are there any additional codecs that could be installed/updated? Maybe a firmware update? Or am I just plain out of luck? Thanks!

Reply 1 : Samsung LED 7000 .MKV issues

weotu,

The formats all have the option of encoding one subtitle file within the container. I believe if the subtitle file is present in the container, it will be shown regardless as part of the file, and this usually depends on the encoding.

The options for more subtitles (and I can't say I'm familiar if "soft subs" falls under this or not) falls more into the "out of luck" category. That may not be the answer you were hoping for, but does that help?

--HDTech

Reply 2 : Samsung LED 7000 .MKV issues

It seems there 'so many out of luck' there. Is it that hard for Samsung to support subtitles?

It is a big deal for a lot of people including myself. I download a lot of .mkv files and the only reason they do it like that is to give the viewer the option of not showing the sub if they want to.
I have a Samsung PNP 50" 7000 series and it is a pain not being able to show the subs. BTW, there is only 'ONE' sub file in the .mkv file I'm trying to play and it does not show up.

Reply 3 : Samsung LED 7000 .MKV issues

" BTW, there is only 'ONE' sub file in the .mkv file I'm trying to play and it does not show up."

When that fails, you need to put the file external to the mkv.

Compaq 6910p laptop - Caps lock is causing the audio touch bar to go mental - any ideas? :(

Hi guys

We have a Compaq 6910p laptop with XP Pro. The laptop has had a problem over the last few months which we've not been able to fix.

Basically, as soon as you press the caps lock the actual volume and volume touch bar (at the top right of the keyboard) go crazy, and there is a popping sound through the speakers where it's turning on and off and up and down.

I have updated the BIOS to version F17 (as F19 would not correctly flash) and have installed the latest drivers for the touchpad and quick keys. However, the problem also occurs when I go into the BIOS or am in the boot screens, ie before Windows has loaded, so I suspect it's not a driver issue.

I have searched on Google and also on the HP support knowledge base. I've not found much but there were a few other people that had the same problem with this model but I couldn't establish if and how they resovled it. I suspect that it may be a (known?) hardware fault with this model.

Has anyone else had the same problem and been able to resolve it?

Thanks!

Reply 1 : Compaq 6910p laptop - Caps lock is causing the audio touch bar to go mental - any ideas? :(

Since it seems to be keyboard related, it could be faulty. It's simple to test: unplug laptops keyboard and plug in normal usb keyboard.

All you need is usb keyboard and small screwdriver, no need to immediately buy any spare parts

There's always chance that the keyboard is working just fine, problem could be the motherboard itself. Keyboard is cheaper to replace if needed so it should be the first step.

Ah, I hadn't considered that. I'm off now until next week so I'll give it a go when I get back into work.

Thanks KLF. If anyone comes up with any other suggestions in the meantime please post as well! Thanks!

Latitude E5420 - I need some informations before buying!

Hi,

I'm interested in buying the E5420 with the following configuration:

cpu: Intel Core I5-2520M (2.50GHz ,3MB cache ,Dual Core)

ram: 4 gb 1333 mhz ddr3 (2x2 gb)

hdd: 320GB SATA II 7200 rpm

screen: 14.0" UltraSharp HD+ (1600x900) Anti-Glare LED-backlit

battery: Primary 9 cell 97WHR

If someone of you already owns it or can answer to my questions:

1. is the integrated graphic chip (intel 3000 hd) able to show fluently 1080p flash videos (like youtube ones) and high-definition local videos like mkv?

2. will it be possible to change the cpu in the future? i think i5 and i7 have the same socket, but i have no idea, for example, if the i7 is supported or not by the motherboard i'll get with the i5.

3. how many hours can the battery work keeping the screen's light quite low, not using heavy applications, etc.?

4. does the laptop get too hot while playing games or i can play decently like for example on the 2011 13" macbook pro (which also has i5 and intel 3000 hd)?

5. is it possible to run 64bit macOs snow leopard on it (using iDeneb, iAtkos or projects like these)? it wasn't possible on my previous laptop, a vaio which built a centrino 2.

6. can it virtualize 64 bit stuff like operating systems through virtualbox and vmware? this also wasn't possible on my previous laptop.

7. which hardware is upgradable (cpu, ram, hdd, the whole motherboard, ...)?

8. did someone overclock the cpu/gpu? how was the result?

9. any compatibility issue with linux?

10. is the keyboard the same one that is built on the XPS Studio? i'm asking because it's a bit too hard for me, i mean, i hate pressing keys using too much strength... btw i could buy an external one.

11. what's your overall opinion about this laptop?

thanks in advance!

Reply 1 : Latitude E5420 - I need some informations before buying!

I just got my E5420 (an hour ago). i5-2410, 2gb ram (will be upgraded).

Runs youtube 1080p like a champ so far, not that 1080p is doing much at this resolution.

It's been a while since I used the new XPS, but the Lattitude keyboard seems similar in form but different in feel. Keys are light to press, and I recall the XPS keys having a more slick surface. The backlight times out and comes back on when anything is pressed or touched (such as the touchpad), which possibly has a way to be adjusted to be on all the time, not sure.

I gotta say it feels a little more plasticky/flimsy than I expected from a Lattitude. The only other Lattitude I've used is the 4310, and it felt much sturdier, more solid. It's not notable enough to be a deal killer for me, though my time with it has been short so who knows. The lid has some play/wiggle when closed.

I slid the battery release buttons out while playing around (wasn't sure what they were at first, ha), and one of them won't slide back into its original position.

The fan is a bit noisy, and runs frequently (not constantly), though I'll need more time with it to see if I find it distracting.

edit: overall I have to say I'm not "impressed," with it, since it just doesn't have the solid build (at least superficially) I was expecting, not just for a lattitude but for any laptop. But I wasn't looking for a desktop replacement or anything fancy, so my demands aren't high. Honestly, the previous generation Vostro even felt more solid than this.

That's about all I can comment on at this point.

Reply 2 : Latitude E5420 - I need some informations before buying!

The i5-2520m is a dual core hyperthreaded processor.

So it's very suitable for virtualization, and has support for ALL intel virtualization technologies, VMWare and VirtualBox will work very nicely.

Regarding Snow Leopard, there's a VMWare image of that running around the torrents, so that would be possible as well.

Reply 3 : Latitude E5420 - I need some informations before buying!

I have received my E5420 yesterday.

Wanted to share with you that I am extremely pleased with the build quality.

I am currently using 3-years old HP Compaq 6910p at work which is a business class laptop. The Dell E5420 feels on par in terms of build quality and of course light years ahead in terms of speed.

I became little nervous after placing online order when I started to read multiple complaints regarding E6420 build quality on this forum. My thinking was that since E5420 is considered lower class model than E6420, the quality situation on E5420 might be even worse. I mentally prepared to send it back, get a refund and look elsewhere. I am happy that quality on my E5420 turned out to be top notch.

The good:

Solid construction. Practically no palm rest flex. Very little to no keyboard flex. Streamlined elegant look. Metal screen lid makes for very sturdy screen. There are no screen ripples when pressing on the lid. Matte 1600x900 screen is easy on the eyes. Cool to the touch with Core-i5 processor. Whisper quiet fan (I may not hear it because it sits next to old HP 6910p with loud fan). Backlit keyboard with 4 brightness levels is a big plus at night. Keys are evenly lit. The keys are pleasant to press. Core-i5 processor easily renders Hulu onto HDTV via HDMI cable. The standard battery appears to hold on for 5+ hrs.

The bad:

PageUp/PageDown keys are right next to frequently used arrow keys. I keep accidentally pressing them while editing text and the text jumps away. On contrary, Home/End keys are far away on the top row surrounded by other keys. This makes it hard to use navigation keys without looking. Hope I will get used to it with time.

I am planning to add SSD and increase memory from 2 to 4gb.

Overall impression - excellent.

ASUS U80V partial disassembly with pics

Here's partial disassembly instructions for the ASUS U80V. These are from memory so they are not guaranteed to be perfectly accurate! I got some pictures while adding a 3rd wireless antenna and this post is in the exact order of that process. I didn't take apart the chassis completely, so details about removing the display, webcam, mic, speaker, etc. cables are not included here. This should get you well on the way to complete disassembly if that is the task you are faced with.

Chassis disassembly

1. Remove all the screws on the bottom of the laptop and remove the bottom cover:

2. Remove 2 screws for the hard drive caddy. Lift up the hard drive and unplug it from the cable and remove it.

3. Remove the optical drive by pushing it out with a small flathead screwdriver by the metal tab just to the left of the CPU in the pic above.

4. Remove the three screws that are revealed after removing the optical drive:

5. Remove the keyboard by pressing 4 tabs at the top of the keyboard with a medium guitar pick or a plastic prytool, etc. while lifting the keyboard by its edges. Here are generic keyboard removal instructions that I wrote previously.

6. Tilt the keyboard and remove the ribbon cable and the backlight cable, by gently releasing the clips on either side of the connectors.

7. Remove the tape at the bottom to reveal the touchpad cable and gently lift the white tab on the connector to release the cable.

8. Remove the screws:

9. Pry the case open with a guitar pick, spudger, or prytool. Do this very gently so that you don't break the tabs, they are brittle plastic. Start at one corner and work your way across one edge. Then start at the other side and work your way around the case. The curved plastic area around each hinge is fragile but will come apart easily by gently lifting at the edges once the rest of the case is apart. Once it separates, do not completely open it because the power button and expressgate button cables only have a little slack:

10? I did not remove the bottom part of the chassis, but for complete disassembly you will need to since the button cable connectors are on the underside.

Screen disassembly

1. Remove the two square plastic screw covers at the bottom corners of the screen bezel with an xacto knife or razor blade. Catch the razor underneath the plastic edge and pry upwards, trying not to scratch the bezel or ruin the plastic cover. They are attached with a small amount of adhesive and if removed carefully will re-apply without problems:

2. Remove the 4 rubber pads from the top of the screen bezel to reveal 4 screws. These are also held on with a small amount of adhesive that should be good for one reuse if removed gently and kept clean until reassembly.

3. Remove 6 screws that hold on the screen bezel (two at the bottom and four at the top).

4. Gently pry from one top edge of the bezel to the bottom with a guitar pick, prytool, spudger or an expired credit/gift card (don't risk damaging a good one). Then move your way around the edges of the case, again making sure to not use too much force so that the small plastic tabs don't break and the bezel plastic doesn't bend. The curved plastic around the hinge is especially fragile, and should be pried off last. They will release easily by gently prying at the seams.

5? For complete disassembly, you must have previously unplugged the LCD cables from the motherboard, but I didn't do this step since I was just adding an antenna behind the LCD.

6. Remove 4 screws holding in the LCD to the lid.

Here's a pic of the antenna cable routing near the hinge:

There's a lot that I didn't cover here, I will try to answer any questions that I can. Keep in mind that this is a friend's machine; I don't have it on hand to look at and take apart again.

Hi.

What can you tell me about samsung notebooks?

Never had one and never knew anyone with one.

Any user already has the QX412?

Or any good and complete review on the net?

Thanks

Reply 1 : Qx412

Never had one either but I am extremely interested in the QX412. I say it is the best all round 14" laptop out there - 2nd gen sandy bridge i5, 9 hour battery life, thin and portable, will last in terms of technology, chiclet/island style keybaord, etc. The only thing that lets it down is the resolution and no backlit keyboard.

I read that in recent years Samsung laptops have really stepped up and should be considered even though it is not an obvious brand for laptops. I think the build and the stuff under the hood are very good.

Samsung have been producing notebooks for more than 5 years (the X60 that I reviewed (see link in my signature) is 5 years old and still running (although I've had to replace the HDD and the battery holds no charge)). The oldest thread in this forum is almost 7 years old and relates to the X30 (which Dell sold as the latitude X1).

The X, Q and QX series the premium models (usually thinner and lighter) while the R series are the "value" models.

Dell Studio 17 not charging

I have a Studio 17 have had it for about 2.5 years. A couple of months ago I started getting a message saying I had the wrong adaptor plugged in and needed a 90W one. The battery is now at 0% and everytime I start the computer I get a message telling me my AC adaptor is less than 90W and I need to connect correct one. I have to press F1 everytime to get the computer to start up with "wrong" adaptor. The thing is, I have had the same adaptor the whole time so why now is it saying its wrong. I have tried a new battery and that didn't work either.
What can I do?
No longer under warranty so if I had to take it to a computer repair person roughly how much would it cost to fix?

Reply 1 : Dell Studio 17 not charging

At 2.5 years the 300 CYCLE battery may be indeed be gone. A failing battery could overtax the power brick so for a test, try it without the old battery.

BUT FIRST try the old reset trick. Remove the battery (and brick) then hold the power button down for 10 seconds. I hold it down for the full minute. Let go, install battery, brick (adapter), count to 10 and try it again.

hp mini 5101 owners

I have an HP mini 5101 bought on November 2009. The computer is great, I truly like it very much. But less than a year after I bought it, the machine got a crack on the keyboard frame. It was located right above the fan vent. The problem was fixed by HP, as the warranty was still valid.

But the same problem appeared again two weeks ago: same crack, same location.

The keyboard still works well, but would like to know if anyone else had the same problem.

Thanks for your input.

Reply 1 : hp mini 5101 owners

You're not the only one. Back then I did some searching and that did happen to many users.

I had my 5101 break shortly after I bought it, had it repaired under warranty no problem. Some time after the right side frame was a little bit loose so I was afraid it might break again. I did sell the computer before it could break again.

Reply 2 : hp mini 5101 owners

Thanks very much for the reply.

I wonder if there is a way to document the fact that there is an issue with the keyboard. People at HP claim that is not a documented issue and hence I will have to cover the repair on my own (at this time the machine is out of warranty).

Thanks.

hello. im an avarage gamer with i will say low budget willing to buy a descent laptop for games like Lineage2 ,League of legends , warcraft etc.

firstly i laid my eyes on sony vaio for 680 pounds with absolute same specs as inspiron 15r has:

Intel CoreTM i5-480M Processor (3M Cache, 2.66 GHz)

4096MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x2048]

1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650

except for hdd vaio had 7200rpm/dell 5400 (the difference was 50 pounds)

after searching lots and lots on netbookcheck.net i found out that vaio has a good cooling engine and it doesnt overheat. but unfortunately sony is downclocking radeon 5650 to 450 mhz.

i couldnt find much about dell inspiron 15r if it overheats or not. and i couldnt find if dell is downclocking radeon aswell.

maybe somebody knows if inspiron 15r is overheating and do dell downclock radeon 5650 aswell?

ATI 6970M in a GX660R

Has anyone managed this yet?

Someone has tried and apparently succeeded. I received these pictures (from a customer of MXM Upgrade) of part of the 5870 heat sink that needs to be cut so that the 6970 can fit. That's all the modding that's required for the 6970 to work!

Can someone upload some better pictures?

Eurocom sells the 6970M for $575. What makes me wonder is that they list the card with "TDP 75-100W". It's very weird, as AMD's specification states that 6970M has TDP of 100W.

GX740 + 6970M anyone?

MXM-upgrade offered me a buy and try type of thing, where if I could not get it to work, and documented what I tried and made a report, they would fully refund my money. I decided that I didn't want to drop the $600US to try, and then possibly be out a 5870 heatsink as well. Now I'm thinking with that small modification I might just go ahead and buy it. Anyone think the 660 can handle it with my 920xm as well? I'm just worried now that with my 920xm the heat may be too much for this laptop to handle. But a 920xm and a 6970m would be a great combo that would last me for a long time.

Is there a European seller?

I have a 920xm and I am also worried about the heat. But I have noticed that whilst I play games the CPU temps don't go over 65c.

Wow 65C, mine goes up to in the mid/high 70s C. I think I'm going to repaste it today. Did you use the pea method? I'm thinking I'm going to repaste it, and try that, and make sure I push down on the heatsink really hard.

I would be worried with how the notebook handles the power, my guess is that its not going to be pretty if the mobo gets fried

I used the line method. I was going to the use the cross method but the Arctic MX4 was so thick that this was not possible. I screwed the heatsink back on very tight. I am currently getting 44 to 49c on idle.

I just repasted, and it I got the idle temps down to 47C. I used a much smaller amount, the pea method, and pressed a large amount of pressure down on the heatsink after application. I thought I broke the motherboard after I heard a small cracking noise haha. With a youtube video and typing this the CPU is at 50C so thats much better than before when I was over 60C.

Would the motherboard really fry?
