Need someone to tell me the service tag number under his laptop... urgently

I am considering purchasing an L502X online from the Dell USA site, but I will have to order a Turkish keyboard separately since Dell USA cannot install one and it doesn't look like L502X will become available in Turkey soon.

A friend who works for a company that used to be the Dell distributor in Turkey said he could contact the USA warehouse that makes these keyboards and see if a Turkish keyboard is available for L502X, but what he needs to know is the service-tag number located under the L502X. The problem is I don't own an L502X yet: I will purchase it if there's a Turkish keyboard available for it.

Would anyone here be so kind to tell me his/her service-tag number?

The warehouse wants to know the service-tag number; somehow the model code (L502X) is not enough for them to be able to give us the information we need.

Maybe the service-tag number pattern would be enough, too. I mean someone could tell me his number but make up the last digit or digits.

So anybody could help me with that?

They might just need the part number for the US version of the backlit keyboard? Which is 331-1668.

Thanks a lot for the part number. But it turns out it's not enough to know the part number of the keyboard: I'd really appreciate it if you could tell me the service tag number under the laptop.

F series charge problem

Hi, i purchased a VAIO F-Series laptop last september from sony center (UK), got it home fired it up everything was working fine apart from the charge socket, when i plugged the charger in it was a bit wobbly but i just dismissed it, but now it seems the socket has a little crack on it and the wobble has got worse and the pin on the charger sometimes gets really hot to the point where i cant touch it, plus it will only charge if i move it around to a certian position.

So who do i contact to get this fixed, the store or sony customer services and will it get fixed under warranty?

Help is much appreciated.

Reply 1 : F series charge problem

Call Sony customer service. It should be covered under warranty unless they have some reason to think you dropped it or caused the damage yourself.

HP Officejet 6500 All-in-One printer

I would appreciate any information, good and bad, about the HP Officejet 6500 All-in-One printer. It is currently available for $99.00 which seems to be an outstanding price for what HP claims it can do. I have read some reviews and they are knocking the wireless part of the printer, an option I will not be using so not too interested in those problems. Some reviewers were knocking the scanner, that after scanning they couldn't print. Also, some had problems installing the Windows 7 driver. Printer is rated at 3.5 to 4.0 out of 5 stars. I print 4x6 color photos on occasion but not frequently but I still want quality color prints. I like the idea of easy copying of documents so I like the copy feature. Incidentally, I will be replacing an older HP 7550 printer that for Windows 7 requires a driver for the HP 5500 printer. This was OK but the printer is now totally broken and must be replaced. Sorry for rambling on.

Again, any comments will be appreciated........Ralph

Reply 1 : HP Officejet 6500 All-in-One printer

I was hoping for some input so am a little disappointed in no replies. If someone should check my post, would you know if this printer has ICC profiles so I don't have to use the printer's color management. I downloaded the manual and it doesn't specifically indicate anything about color management.

Thanks..........Ralph

I purchased an HP Officejet 6500 recently and although the fax/copier and b/w document print-outs are of good quality, I am having major problems with accurate colors. My previous color printer was a small Lexmark and although the print quality was not as good, The colors were much more accurate.

Don't know if this might help, Ralph, but thought I would mention it to you.

At the office we use one of these:

Look for the Pantone Huey as well.

Reply 5 : HP Officejet 6500 All-in-One printer

I recently bought one to use both on my Mac and PC running Windows 7. It runs beautifully on my Mac, but it will not scan to my PC. I've spent literally hours with different tech support agents until finally one told me I'd have to talk to a "level 2" tech support agent and to call back. When I did I was put on hold for 51 minutes (confirmed on my cell phone)then cut off. I called back, waited another 20 minutes and was told they would "have to exhaust all possibilities" before getting me to a level 2 agent. When I asked how many people I'd have to talk to before all possibilities were exhausted I was told that a level 2 agent would call me back. Don't know if this will ever be resolved (my computer doesn't detect the scanner), but with tech support so bad, I wouldn't recommend it for a PC.

Reply 6 : HP Officejet 6500 All-in-One printer

We have an Officejet 6500 and it prints very slow! If you print from Quickbooks you will have problems. Right now it prints about 2 pages per minute. Don't expect good tech support

T61 hinges

I just got a T61p, and has anyone replaced the hinges in a T61 before?

My main question is that i buy some new hinges (like off ebay or somewhere) will these be better than the original ones or will they start the crap out and get some play in them like how they are now?

Coming from a T43, then handling multiple T60s, the build quality of the T61 came as a bit of a shocker.

Reply 1 : T61 hinges

I think you're either easily shocked, or trying for dramatic effect - because I also went from a T43 to a T61 without noticing anything with the hinges (or in fact the build quality overall).

Reply 2 : T61 hinges

I agree with mochaultimate. The only Thinkpad I've had has been a t61p and I've had no trouble with the hinges.

Easily shocked? Dramatic effect?

here is a video of the same problem that someone else had:

YouTube - Lenovo ThinkPad T61 - Loose Screen Lid / Hinge

Here is a write up that a different person did on the hinge issue:

http://ventilatorxor.wordpress.com/2...een-lid-hinge/

Other things i noticed, the keyboard does not feel as solid on the left side, in fact it actually sounds hollow if you hit the keys right.

Also with the display, there is noticeable backlight bleed at the bottom with dark backgrounds that stands out over the rest of the screen...this is on the 1920x1200 display.

Also on the right palm rest, there is a gap between the plastic and whatever is underneath which sometimes causes a tapping noise.

The T60 and and T43 were perfect, i just didn't see that in the T61p.

Reply 4 : T61 hinges

Personally speaking the hinge quality is actually better on the T6x than on the T4x.

I would recommend you get the new hinge from IBM parts, they only cost slightly more than the ebay ones, but you do get the assurance of it been a new part rather than a used part or used part passed off as refurbished one.

Given the price drop coming from T4x to T6x laptops, there are also more people purchasing it, which drives up the no. of Thinkpads in circulation.

Finally, the T6x hinges are made by the same two companies as the T4x hinges, which are Reel and KATO.

Regarding keyboard, the only difference between the T4x keyboard and T6x keyboards are the key feel, but i haven't experienced any hollow sound effect. But what you said could occur since there is more room under the T61p 15.4 inch keyboard for better air circulation, and if you hit the key right you can set up a resonance frequency to give that hollow sound.

thanks, yea i was kinda leery on getting parts from ebay, I'll check them out on lenovo's site.

Reply 6 : T61 hinges

After viewing that YouTube video on the T61 hinge "wiggle", mine also wiggles, but not THAT bad. It has about a 1" of "play" in the screen.

Funny, because my X301 has NO play on the hinges. (Then again, it also cost 3X as much lol).

Reply 7 : T61 hinges

Yea mine has quite a bit of play in it (like the youtube vid). I have recently bought:

2 T60s w/ 15" wide

2 more T60s w/ 14" 4:3

1 T61p w/ 15" wide

and I have my T43 w/ 14" 4:3

The only one that has any play is the T61p

All of the others are tight and perfect.

Reply 8 : T61 hinges

So your t6x you bought are second hand?

Reply 9 : T61 hinges

Yep, as well as the t43 a few years ago.

Lookng into the future

I saw a thread where the new xps gpu look like they are glued but not soldered? So can anyone confirm it is not soldered. If its not we can upgrade it in the future.

Also, is the cpu soldered?

Reply 1 : Lookng into the future

Also is there two harddrive caddys in the r2?

Reply 2 : Lookng into the future

The thread states in short regardless of if there is glue they are also soldered, hence the electrical connection or at the least glue would be harder to remove.

Neither the GPU or CPU are individually upgradable.

There isn't two hard drive caddys in the 15" as standard. There is in the 17".

You can replace the optical drive with another hard drive and run the optical drive from the eSata/USB port with a cable and caddy.

Reply 3 : Lookng into the future

Thank you for clearing that up bud. Is there pictures of the a dissembled r2 xps 15?

Reply 4 : Lookng into the future

No worries.

Your best bet is to look at the Dell Service Manuals.

G73sw display options (non 3D versions)

Hi

Some retailers offers to change out the display for a presumably better option with higher gamut (90%).

Anybody did this? What would the advantages be? I mostly use the computer for surfing, email, streaming TV and playing some games.

Just wondering if this is something I should consider.

There are a ton of threads regarding this.

Most games play and look great on high, and 1600x900, looking better than the 720p screens.

My Resident Evil 5 set at that res and max everything with AA at 2x gets 35fps during cut scenes and like 45-50 during gameplay BUT, thats with overclocking. It's about 10fps less stock.

Black Ops isn't too bad, and Shogun II: Total War works fairly well too!

Dragon Age II runs pretty well, but I can't remember what it's set at.

Dead Space II works well on full as well.

Satellite P series

Has Toshiba discontinued their Satellite P series laptop? I couldn't find it on toshibadirect.com.

Thanks!

L702x issues after clean install

Only a couple of issues, but here goes. Haven't been able to find them elsewhere on the threads.

1) Cannot seem to get to the Nividia control panel. I have downloaded the drivers twice. I also grabbed the Nividia optimus tool, and have yet to get my GT 555 3GB to even turn on. I may be under estimating the intel graphics abilities, but I'd like to be able to see the difference. What is a tool to be able to test the GPU performance? I only get the 6.9 on the windows experience, but I assume that is just the intel graphics since I can't get the gpu to turn on.

2) Turning off indexing and pagefile. I can't seem to do this, which as I understand is recomended with an SSD. I am still trying to optimize windows 7 for the SSD, so any other links or recomendations would help.

3) Having trouble reassigning Documents, Music and Pictures to my secondary HDD. Do you have to have a file set up first? or does it just move the folder to the HDD?

Reply 1 : L702x issues after clean install

Found this from 2010 about how to assign files to SSD/HD - it's a walkthrough so it might help: How to: Setup SSD boot drive with secondary Hard disc optimization - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net

Reply 2 : L702x issues after clean install

6.9 is right for the gt 555m

Reply 3 : L702x issues after clean install

Ok. But what can I do to get the thing to turn on? It doesn't ever register on the Nvidia optimus monitor. And I still can't get to the control panel.

Reply 4 : L702x issues after clean install

The nVidia control panel installs with the drivers, right? Do you not know how to launch the control panel, or does nothing happen when you launch it?

Reply 5 : L702x issues after clean install

I had dell tech support do it. It wouldn't install correctly from the website, even though it ran through the setup. It took him a bit to get it working too, he had to disable something first and uninstall and reinstall the driver. Wish I could give you more info on the solution, but they fixed it whatever it was.

Create a New Folder called "Documents" on your D: drive. Then in explorer under Libraries right click on the Documents and choose properties.

Click "Include a Folder" and choose the folder you created on the D: drive, then choose "Set Save Location".

You can remove the old locations if you like.

Do the same for Music, Pictures, Video.

HDMI Input Issue - Only One Port Working

Greetings,

I'm hoping Anthony or any other forum member can provide some insight into my problem.
Here is my setup:
Samsung LN40B630 (Latest firmware)
Playstation 3 (Latest firmware)
Homebuilt PVR w/ MS Media Center

If I try to plug the PS3 or PVR into HDMI inputs #1, #2, or #3 I see "Searching For Signal" for a brief second then the it changes to "No Signal". Input #4 works with no problems at all.

Even stranger, if I plug the PS3 into #4, and the PVR into any other HDMI input, the PS3 output can be seen on both sources. It's as if it believes the single input is plugged into multiple ports. (vice-versa and the sources behave the same way)

Here's a kicker, everything worked fine for the last 3 months and this problem just surfaced today.

Here's my list of ideas tried thus far with no success:
Replace HDMI Cables
Reset output settings on the PS3
Reset output settings on the PVR
Reset video settings on the TV
Turn on/off TV and sources in various orders

Reply 1 : HDMI Input Issue - Only One Port Working

Muldermj,

Well, it seems like you either looked through the forums, or spent a lot of time troubleshooting (or both!). Normally I'd think that "Searching for Signal" or "Not Supported Format" would be a resolution issue, but since you've tried that with no success, I have to admit that I'm stumped by the outcome. HDMI-4 may be an independent input - just a thought, though I'm unable to confirm that of course.

What I would suggest is having the unit serviced. Since it's a B-Series, that indicates a 2009 model, and you're likely under warranty still. I would definitely recommend registering your product online (which gives an additional 3 months of warranty coverage for U.S. customers), and then calling in and seeing if you can have your unit inspected and repaired.

If you'd like to try a home remedy situation, with the TV on, hold down the EXIT button, and you can reset your television to factory defaults. I would note, however, that if you had your television professionally calibrated, those settings will be gone.

Keep me posted.

Reply 2 : HDMI Input Issue - Only One Port Working

Anthony,

Thanks for the quick feedback this morning!

In a last ditch effort because nothing else was working I unplugged all HDMI sources from the TV, and left the TV power unplugged overnight. This morning I plugged in the TV power, powered it on, then plugged in each HDMI source. To my surprise, it was working again!

The only thing I can think of is a handshake issue sent the HDMI ports into a "confused" state and they stopped functioning properly. Regardless, I logged a Samsung service request and heard back from the service company by 9:00 am this morning. That's quick service!

I explained the problem and the owner of the service company recommended we replace the main board just to be sure.

To make a long story short, I got it working again but there is no clear reason as to why it occurred in the first place.

Reply 3 : HDMI Input Issue - Only One Port Working

I have been having the same problem with my LN55B650 since the last firmware update. I have a technician coming on Monday (12/21) to service the TV. I have noticed that at least 3 others on this board have the same issue.

I tried the Exit button trick, have tried updating (downdating) to old firmware via USB and online - no relief.

Will try to unplug and leave off overnight....

Reply 4 : HDMI Input Issue - Only One Port Working

I have the same issue. I had the motherboard replaced (under warranty) on 1/26 and the problem started again last night (2/16). Only one HDMI port works (#2). I will try the suggestions and see if they work.

Reply 5 : HDMI Input Issue - Only One Port Working

I tried the following.

* Factory reset - no change
* Upgrade Firmware - no change

I pulled the plug for a couple of hours and the problem was fixed. This is a strange issue. I hop Samsung fixes it with a firmware upgrade because it seems to be a software issue.

Reply 6 : HDMI Input Issue - Only One Port Working

Hi

Did samsung ever get back to you about this issue?

I aslo have the exact same issue and just installed the latest firmware update....

Reply 7 : HDMI Input Issue - Only One Port Working

Yes! Same exact thing here! Had the motherboard replaced 6 weeks ago under warranty and then the problem cleared up only to resurface again last night. The first time it happened, unplugging the TV overnight fixed it, but then that trick never worked again.

The only possibly related cause I can find is the first time I had the problem, it happened shortly after I started keeping a laptop hooked up to the TV's VGA input. Since the TV's motherboard replacement I had used the PC input only occasionally for a minute or two at a time. Then last night was the first time I used the PC input again for a few hours, and the problem reappeared immediately after. I don't know if it's just coincidence or if the PC is somehow frying the TV's circuits. Do any of you who are experiencing this issue also have a PC hooked up?

Here's my setup:

HDMI 1: Dish Network DVR
HDMI 2: Xbox 360
HDMI 3: Sony Blu-Ray
VGA: Compaq Laptop
Component 1: DVD player

Reply 8 : HDMI Input Issue - Only One Port Working

I read in another forum that some people with this problem had Samsung send them a new firmware update back in January that supposedly fixed the problem. I went online and found that there was indeed a newer January version of the firmware, version 1014 (my set had 1013 installed). Unfortunately before I could try the firmware I had already restored my HDMI ports by unplugging the set overnight, so I don't know if installing this firmware has really fixed the problem or if the issue going to reappear. Anyone else heard of or tried this firmware fix?

Samsung Tech, can you let us know what the story is?

Reply 9 : HDMI Input Issue - Only One Port Working

toecheese,

From the firmware notes, besides adding a codec to Media Play:

This Firmware will correct the following phenomenons some units may experience.

. Intermittent Not Supported Mode when connecting with some Unit through HDMI.
. When viewing 1080i formatted signals through the Component Input,
the picture is intermittently jumping up and down.
. Intermittent No Sound on 1080p when connecting with some Unit through HDMI.
. When viewing 720p or 1080i formatted signals through the Component Input,
the picture is intermittently flickering.
. When viewing some resolution(720 x 1440i) signals with Set-Top Box,
''Not Supported Message'' may appear on the screen.

Why it would work intermittently after plugging in a different device isn't something I can explain. I can't determine if any problem is going to resurface or not.

Reply 10 : HDMI Input Issue - Only One Port Working

I had the same problem, HDMI ports not working, only HDMI/DVI port 2 working. I have a media center PC with and Invidia GS 8400 card and a bd-p1590 Samsung blu-ray player plugged in. The Samsung service rep replaced the main board and noted that the HDMI chip looked like it had gotten hot, because the painted lettering had faded significantly. This repair fixed the problem for about a week. Now ports 1 and 2 show the same input (whatever I have plugged in one shows on source 1 and 2) and ports 3 and 4 only show "no signal" regardless of what I plug into them. The TV recognizes when I turn on the blu-ray player because it changes to that source automatically, but if it is plugged into 3 or 4 it still shows "no signal". I updated to firmware version 1018 but that has not helped. Very frusterating. I've scheduled another service visit and will try the unplugging the TV power and then plugging the two sources back in as described in the other chain entitled "Samsung: HDMI Input Issue - Only One Port Working". The issues described in that chain are exacly the same, we may want to combine them.

Reply 11 : HDMI Input Issue - Only One Port Working

The other post with users having the same problem is actually "Samsung: Non Functioning HDMI port for SAMSUNG LN52B750"
Sorry for the mistake.

Reply 12 : HDMI Input Issue - Only One Port Working

I have this issue. Approx once every 3 months or so, the TV will exhibit this behavior. I just unplug the power and all the HDMI cables and leave it overnight. The next morning, I plug everything back in and it works again.

At least there is a work-around. Yes, it is annoying, but the only time it interrupts me is if I am wanting to watch something that evening. I just ran some composite cables from the satelite receiver to the TV. SD only, but for that one night every 3 months, if I want to watch, it works.

I thought Samsung would have fixed this by now with a new firmware, but I guess not.

Reply 13 : HDMI Input Issue - Only One Port Working

I fixed the problem for now by unplugging my tv and then plugged it back in and adding the HDMI source components one by one. Now the TV shows both on the proper source ports and does not appear to be confused. To get the sound to work for my media center PC over the HDMI link I had to install the latest realtek and nvidia drivers for my media center pc from the HP website. I had newer drivers for both installed, but apparently they conflicted or did not play nice with my media center pc. I'm running an HP Pavilion Elite m9040n, a Samsung pn50b650 HDTV and a Samsung bd-p1590 blu-ray player. I'm not happy that the TV's HDMI processor is so finicky.

Reply 14 : HDMI Input Issue - Only One Port Working

March,2011 Melbourne Australia 50" Plasma. Purchased December, 09

Had a similar problem with only one HDMI input ( #3 ) of the four working.
When other inputs were connected, whatever signal was working in #3 was replicated irrespective of the device being used.
To fix this I powered down everything overnight( unplugged at the supply ), also disconected all HDMI leads at the TV.
Following morning powered up the TV and added each input and powered them up individually. This fixed the problem.
Because my problem occurred 15 months after the original post above it appears this is a common lock up problem and the fix hopefully will work for others.

Cf 51 only runs on battery

I have Mk2 that only runs on battery, power cord tested OK, resoldered power connecter on mother board, looking like MB is fried (this is my 2nd MB in this unit, 1st one the display blacked out and replacing MB fixed it, so now this , are the MB's pieces of sh** in these toughbooks?

Reply 1 : Cf 51 only runs on battery

don't know as much about the mk2 but the mk3 is a good deal as for the cpu swap to a core2duo is concerned. sometimes you can get a reasonable deal on the mk3's from buybest15 or buybest13 and then up the ram to 4gb pc2 5300 and get a hdd caddy and go for a samsung ide 160gb hhd or the 320 wd wd3200beve which works well. it adds up quick if you assemble the parts or if you luck up and find a complete unit and just add the ram, cpu, hdd. either way alot of the forum members that use the cf-51 core duo with upgrades are pleased with the performance. I've been fortunate so far with 6 of them.........Driller

Reply 2 : Cf 51 only runs on battery

I have had many MK1's and MK2's and never had any problems with them at all. Great laptop and as Driller said the MK3 is even better

Reply 3 : Cf 51 only runs on battery

Driller, do I contact bestbuy 15, or does he just post in buy and sell forum

Reply 4 : Cf 51 only runs on battery

bestbuy 13 and 15 are Ebay sellers.

Reply 5 : Cf 51 only runs on battery

I had this happen on a MK3 I got off eBay. Look on the bottom of the MB at the power connector and follow the + trace and look for a possible cold solder joint. On my Mk3 it was at choke, L103 as I recall. In fact the Mk3 uses two chokes and one was missing.

I wonder if there is a little bit of flex in this area if the power connector is pressed very hard, or the cord gets jerked.

Anyway, the issue was the same, ran on battery only, works great now!

Reply 6 : Cf 51 only runs on battery

John, that was it on mine also, except its labeled L810 ( Mk2 and Mk2LL boards). I just touched it with a probe and it fell right off the board. I'll probably messed it up when I try to resolder it, thanks

Reply 7 : Cf 51 only runs on battery

Hinge, It was a little touch and go when I redid mine, but it's still working just fine!

LN46C670 - HDMI1 port?

A few weeks ago, I got a new tv (LN46C760).. I like it a bunch.. Now I am upgrading some of my other AV equipment..

I replaced a regular DVD player with a Samsung BD-C5500 Blu-ray player (on sale @ BB)

I am confused as to the function of the HDMI (port 1) on the TV. It states that if you are using a DVI connection (like from a computer), you must use the HDMI1 port. Does that port also act as a regular HDMI port?

I ask this question because when I play a blu-ray disk on my 5500, if I use HDMI4, I get 1080p. If I use HDMI1 (dvi), the best I get is 720p.

Do I have a defective tv, do I have a setting wrong, or is HDMI1 dedicated to a dvi connection and does not function like the other (3) HDMI ports?

Reply 1 : LN46C670 - HDMI1 port?

barryware,

Congratulations on your new TV.

So here's how the HDMI ports work. Each of them will support HDMI functionality.

DVI doesn't carry audio, like HDMI would. So if you were to use a DVI input, you would need a separate audio signal from the source And a place for that audio to go.

http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp60/samsung_hd_tech/dvitohmdiexample.jpg

Here's an example showing that if you had DVI, you also need to carry and the audio separately. The HDMI-1 port would be the only port that would be able to use a different connection for the incoming audio.

It should function like other ports. If it doesn't, you may need to rename the inputs by going to:

Menu > Input > Edit Name > "Blu Ray" or other devices. For a DVI device, try "DVI" or "DVI PC".

Does that help?

Which is the Best "Retro" Thinkpad?

I'm looking for a cheap Thinkpad for use at work (Powepoint, Excel, Word docs, ect) and was thinking about getting a retro thinkpad (T43, T60, ect) to save on cash. I occasionally need to burn cd's so I was looking at the T Series. Want a 14" screen (13" or smaller would be great but I think the X301 is the only one that has a cd burner and I can't find a cheap one). I wan't to throw in a new 7200 rpm hard drive and would like to install Windows 7 so I would need a machine that can handle both of those upgrades.

Rather than retro I thought about maybe getting a refurbed 14" edge (about $450) but I prefer the ruggedness of true thinkpads.

Another idea I had was I already own an x61...I thought about buying an ultrabay with a cd burner, just not sure if that would be more or less bulky than a 14" laptop (I would occasionally carry the laptop around with me).

So....what would you do???

Reply 1 : Which is the Best "Retro" Thinkpad?

Hum, given that you want to run Windows 7, i would suggest you get a T60 as the bare minimum.

T61 14.1 inch widescreen with 6 cells battery weighs: 2.457 kg

T60 14.1 inch standard aspect ration with 9 cells weighs: 2.455 kg (with 6 cells weigh about 2.290 kg)

The X61 with 4 cells about weighs about: 1.407 kg

(4 cells battery = 0.217 kg, 8 cells battery = 0.447 kg)

The X6 Ultrabase itself with the optical drive installed weighs about: 0.829 kg

So if you were to get a X61 (4 cells) + ultrabase with optical drive that would weigh a total of: 0.829 kg + 1.407 kg = 2.236 kg.

Reply 2 : Which is the Best "Retro" Thinkpad?

So weight would be similar...what about thickness? How thick is an x61 with an ultrabase?

Which route would you go lead_org?

Reply 3 : Which is the Best "Retro" Thinkpad?

T60 is about 30.76 mm, T61 is about 31.76 mm.

X61 front edge thickness (that is the thinnest) is about 21.19 mm. The back end which is the thickest measures about: 35.36 mm and the middle section is about 28.20 mm (which is the average).

With the ultrabase installed, the front end becomes 40.96 mm, the back end is about 53.18 mm and the middle section becomes about 48.40 mm.

Reply 4 : Which is the Best "Retro" Thinkpad?

There is a retro "IBM logo" T60 being offered here: forum.thinkpads.com • [FS] 14.1" SXGA+ ThinkPad T60

Good luck!

Reply 5 : Which is the Best "Retro" Thinkpad?

There isn't a huge price difference between the T60 and T61, so I suggest you get a T61 (or better). T60 would be ok, but at some point you may want to get an SSD and the T60's hardware is limited to SATA I speeds. The T61 is limited by firmware to SATA I, but a modded BIOS is available to unlock SATA II.

Avoid nVidia graphics if you get one of these, they're all faulty.

Reply 6 : Which is the Best "Retro" Thinkpad?

What, no Z61p?

Seriously though, I'm not sure I'd buy a ThinkPad for day-in/day-out use that had less than an Intel 4-series chipset. The T61 with nVidia video had issues there (knock on wood the one I have here has not). The T60 was limited to 3GB of RAM.

I'd rather buy a T400. That said, if integrated graphics will always be fine for your needs, a 14" T61 ought to do as well. If you want to run Windows 7, there's no way I'd get a Pentium-M based ThinkPad. Fast for its time, but best for running XP.

U31JG: Is it possible to overcharge the battery?

I just got my U31JG last night, and am wondering if it's possible to overcharge the battery on it.

With the battery plugged in and the AC adapter connected, the battery is at 100%. But does the battery continue to get charged continuously even though its at 100%?

Reply 1 : U31JG: Is it possible to overcharge the battery?

The battery will charge to 100% and stop. After that if you unplug it, it will start charging again if the battery is lower than 95%.

Reply 2 : U31JG: Is it possible to overcharge the battery?

Is there way to set the battery charge thresholds using one of the (many) pre-installed Asus utilities?

Thanks.

Reply 3 : U31JG: Is it possible to overcharge the battery?

No, charging parameters are not user-revisable under any platforms.

And all batteries got built in sensors to monitor charge status 24/7 til the battery lives.

Reason they got more then 2 pin inside to connect, serial communication.

As far as I know no software way to change anything.

Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

My 1 1/2 year-old LCD TV model LN32A330 won't turn on by direct and
remote today. The red stand-by light is lit, but never blinks and
the TV won't power up. Are there any people who have got same problem?
And what is the solution?

Any inputs and responses are very appreciated.

Acoust

Reply 1 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

I am experiencing the same thing. The red light stays on as if in Stand By but will not turn on directly or by remote. I have tried everything. My tv is not quite even a year old. I have not been able to get any help. I put in a service request and no one has called me back in the time they said they would.

Reply 2 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

I had the exact same problem with the exact same tv. Took it to a local repairman. It is the capacitors that have gone bad. My tv was out of warrenty but I called Samsung, told them what the problem was and that it is reported all over the internet. They said they had a new policy for the capacitors and would do a free one time fix. The repair man came the other day, switched out the entire power supply board and reset the TV. Problem fixed with no cost to me. You can do this yourself pretty easily, you just have to be sure to reset the TV if it doesn't work after you put in the new board. Unfortunately I don't know how to do the reset, but I saw a thread about it on cnet. But call Samsung first and complain, mention the bad capacitors and you should be able to get it fixed. Good luck!

Reply 3 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

Mine is only about 18 months old and is not used that much.

Reply 4 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

I went to SAMSUNG's website for answers they didn't have an answer to solve the problem, as far as I am concerned people should stop buying SAMSUNG's until they give an answer to fix such problems.

Reply 5 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

Same problem, The TV takes about 20 mins to get a picture when switched on. I am going to call Samsung. Mention the faulty capacitors mentioned in the 17 letters here, and demand they fix it no charge. Let you all know what happens.

Reply 6 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

In reply to a previous poster who's TV went out on them, I have the same problem. After 22 months, it just stopped working. If you search consumer affairs, it seems as if there is a long line of folks with the same TV and same problem. I'll never buy a Samsung TV again. It is out of warranty and I won't spend the money to fix it. Might as well purchase a new one.

Reply 7 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

We bought 1000uf 10V capacitors this morning in Electronics store, we replaced the old ones and the TV worked as before. I supposed to buy a new one instead of repairing it which Samsung would like to charge me at C$190.00. Why not buy another new and better brand one? So treated as toy and project, we did as the video, bravo, sucessful and we saved all the money we budgeted. We just paid only C$3.15 plus fuel charges on this project. Thanks for the video.

Reply 8 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

Same problem here. Do you have name or number for the "new" policy by Samsung covering the
capacitor situation? Thanks

Reply 9 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

The exact same thing happened to me after having the TV for only about 18 months. Although my warranty ran out, I found out I had purchased extra warranty with Walmart. Well worth it. I was sent the packing materials and shipping label and sent the TV in. It was returned immediately and the problem was fixed. Turned out it was the capacitator, a common problem with this TV. My TV is working, but if it were to break again, I definitely will not get another Samsung.

Reply 10 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

Staying away from Samsung won't solve your problem. If you search the web for this problem, it comes up all over the place. The problem is the use of a cheap capacitor to keep costs down. If you want to spend $400-900 on a new LCD TV, by all means do so, but I just had my capacitor replaced and the tech said it's a much higher quality and should last at least three years. Luckily, I was still under warranty, but I asked him how much it would have cost if I weren't and he said about $130 for parts and labor. Even replacing the entire power board would be less than $180 and as long as you still have a good picture, that's a pretty good deal, and there is no guarantee that your new set won't have the same problem a year down the road, regardless of the brand. I think Samsung dealt with the issue wisely with the free one time fix, out of warranty. I don't know of any other manufacturer doing that.

Reply 11 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

Called Samsung they told me my serial number qualified for a free repair and then transferred me to and they wanted $125 hold on my credit card and $50 of it is for evaluation. And I have to ship it to them at my expense because it is a 32 inch. I say Bull Shi* they made the mistake and I have to pay for it. $15 worth of parts I will fix it myself.

Reply 12 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

here's a website that will sell you the correct parts to fix your TV. You just have to know how to solder, which is very easy to learn. The parts are $7.95 which is a good price. There are videos that will show you exactly which capacitors to change out. here's the link to the parts: http://www.hobbymods.com/Samsung%20tv%20power%20up%20problem%20relay%20clicking.htm

Reply 13 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

I bought this TV expressly for watching the occasional movie via computer and for the Marantz stereo settings screen interface, nothing more......no DVD's, no cable, no satellite, just computer movies.
Lovely picture, zero fuss for 18 months until 6 months out of warranty.

Watching a movie one night and just turned off 1/2 way through and never turned on again.
Did some research online and all pointed to bad cap's.
Took the back of the tv off (very well layed out design I must admit) and saw no blown power supply caps, even though I hear that does not mean they are still good.

I did a little deeper search and found a number to call Samsung (800-522-7341) and talked to a nice woman in South Carolina who is sending me a warranty transition # and prepaid mailing slip to their repair facility in NJ where I presume they will make things right.
Probably just involves 10 minutes to take the back off and swap out the power supply board.
The innards of the TV are clean, simple and very well laid out and I was prepared to launch in to repairs of my own until I called that number and she ran the model and serial number.

It's a shame that Samsung TV's have so many of the same problems because they have a really beautiful picture quality and modern HDMI, TOSLINK and RS-232 PC video inputs that make them very appealing for the home theatre crowd.

I just wish, for the minimal expense to beef up a few critical components within the unit, they could have a trouble free product that people will tell their friends about and sales skyrocket.
(Please take that back to corporate Mr. Samsung HD guy if you are listening).

Being one of the 20 million unemployed in America, NOW was NOT the time I ever wanted to buy a new TV to watch my movies from time to time, especially when the unit is virtually brand new.

That being said, I also have a 23 inch Samsung SyncMaster 2333 computer monitor that looks great and has given zero problems (fingers crossed).

Reply 14 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

I had the same problem with mine and called Samsung after reading this thread. Apparently they are aware of the problem and directed me to an authorized service center in my area. Got it fixed today and it took 15 minutes to diagnose and fix the problem...TV is working great and looks a good as ever.

I have 2 other Samsung's including a 55" LED that looks phenomenal! I'm extremely happy that they owned up to the problem and took care it. Will definitely be buying other Samsung products in the future.

Reply 15 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

The same exact think just happened to me today. It's two years old. I took it to Best Buy but the Geek Squad only suggested shipping it off for repair (about $300 including shipping). I am going to take it to a local guy tomorrow. As soon as I know what it is I'll let you know. If you could do the same I'd appreciate it.

Reply 17 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

Just wanted to report that I dropped of my Samsung for the (complimentary) service repairs and the issue was 5 capacitors that had to be replaced...

TV was returned in less than two weeks and works as good as before.

Total cost was just gas money to drop it off...Maybe I'll call Samsung and ask for that back too : )

VERY happy with Samsung's admission and resolution to the problem.

Hope this helps...

Reply 18 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

My wife had a great idea-after Samsung wanted me to ship the TV back for service-we would have to at least pay for insurance-she asked if Samsung had an authorized dealer in the area. Turned out they did and made arrangements to hae the TV fixed there-delivered it at 10AM, picked it up the same day at 5pm. No charge, capacitors fixed. Samsung will not tell you about this option unless you ask. You need to get a business partner # of the authorized dealer, then call 1-800SAMSUNG to have them set up the repair.

Reply 19 : Samsung LCD TV LN32A330 power won't turn on

That entire model is faulty - I suspect its an issue with the capacitor - built in China with cheap copper
Samsung will do a free repair but be careful, the cost of shipping the tv both ways is sometimes more than the value of the tv.

New Vostro Lineup (3350, 3450..)

Sorry if I missed a thread about this.

Hands on with Dell's Inspiron R and Vostro laptops, with new Intel CPUs | Crave - CNET

I'm personally quite disappointed with the chiclet keyboard, though I realize some folks like that style. The Vostro has a nice keyboard, and not being a chiclet-clone was one of the things that drew me to it. Looks like some nice improvements otherwise, though. Unfortunately, the chiclet/island style kills the series for me, or at least removes the reason I would go with Dell over one of the other dozen chiclet clones.

Reply 1 : New Vostro Lineup (3350, 3450..)

value laptops. hopefully i can get one for my birthday next month.

love the vostro series.

ps: i like chiclet keyboard.

Reply 2 : New Vostro Lineup (3350, 3450..)

Ugh horrible...who thought chicklet keyboards were a good idea?

Reply 3 : New Vostro Lineup (3350, 3450..)

I think chicklet boards are more about fashion, given their minimalist flair. Not to be dismissive of the fact that some people genuinely prefer them, but it just doesn't seem to fit a business class notebook, whether it's an entry level one or not. The 3300/3400 etc keyboard is rather unique; not on par with higher end business models like the Latitude, but it was done well and stood above other products in that range. It's a very smooth typing experience, and like many business range laptop buyers, I'm extremely keyboard-centric.

For those who like chicklet (or don't care either way), the mild improvements like USB 3.0, HDMI for the 13", and low intro prices make the Vostro look like an excellent value for a Sandybridge notebook. The battery life (if close to their claim) is a nice improvement as well, especially for the 3350 over the 3300.

Looks like it may be the 5420 for me. Too bad, because I kinda preferred a 13.3", but the 4320 (or 6320 or whatever they're calling it) is more than double the price.

Reply 4 : New Vostro Lineup (3350, 3450..)

There is a chicklet debate. Try using one for productive work. Wait you can't? Big surprise there.

The new Latitude keyboard has kinda of a squishy feel for it, it's okay for productive work, but certainly nowhere near the keyboard feel of my D620/ThinkPad Z61t. Get an old school Latitude/ThinkPad if you want a real man's keyboard.

It's not possible that the driver you have installed is not compatible with win 7. It could be incompatible with Sony if you downloaded it from another source and it is not one that came with your laptop. I don't know which version came with your F11. Nevertheless, if you want to install a newer one, this is the one that came on my F13: ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/VAIO/ORI...05.529.104.ZIP

Most powerful Sony vaio laptop?

Hi guys

just wonder if the Sony Vaio VPCF21Z1E/BI is the most powerful sony vaio laptop in the market?

Reply 1 : Most powerful Sony vaio laptop?

It's currently the only model in the lineup available with a quad core Sandy Bridge processor so yes, I think it is.

Reply 2 : Most powerful Sony vaio laptop?

Sony is not known for high-end gaming laptops, just high-performance luxury laptops, so if you want the best performance possible, Sony is not a good choice. If you wanted style and form factors that one can only get through Sony (like the Z series) then go with Sony. There is a premium for that though...

Reply 3 : Most powerful Sony vaio laptop?

I think he want to compare to other VAIO laptops, not all laptops in the market. Otherwise, Alienware should be on the top for gaming laptops.

SZ650N - Cannot install nVidia drivers in Win 7

Hi all,

Was wondering if I could get some assistance with my boss' notebook. The issue is we frequently get BSODs since upgrading to Win 7 Ultimate (x32) due to display drivers issues. It's a hybrid model with both the 950GMA and the 8400 GS.

I've tried to install the nVidia drivers from the Sony site, but it will not detect the hardware, and will ultimately not install. I've tried to get nVidia hacked drivers, but unfortunately, the 8400 series is not supported due to it's age.

Other steps competed were an automatic driver update in Windows 7.

Any ideas?

Reply 1 : SZ650N - Cannot install nVidia drivers in Win 7

I got Windows 7 installed on an SZ3, and I remember it being incredibly complex, but I can't remember exactly what I did. Unfortunately the laptop was stolen from me several months ago so I can't even look what driver I was using.

I do remember that, despite my research indicating it would be able to switch the graphics card without rebooting when I flicked the switch, I had to reboot like under Windows XP before it worked properly.

Reply 2 : SZ650N - Cannot install nVidia drivers in Win 7

Is there a way to just disable the 8400? The issue is that only the Intel chip is being detected under display adapters.

Reply 3 : SZ650N - Cannot install nVidia drivers in Win 7

The 8400 is supported by Nvidia, they just leave out the information from the driver.

Go here:

Drivers | laptopvideo2go.com

1. Download the modified INF

2. Download the driver.

3. Extract the driver to the desktop (use a sub folder).

4. Copy the INF into the folder, make sure it replaces the original INF. Don't just dump it in and expect it to work.

5. Now, boot into Speed mode, go into control panel, device manager, fin d the display adapter, update the driver, tell it you will select or find the driver manually. Point it at the modified INF file and it should work.

Keep in mind that letting it search for it, will NOT work. You have to tell it exactly which file to use since it is not signed.

Also, follow the guide in my signature to disable Intel Display power management as that also can crash the system.

HT-C5500 Default INPUT

Can anyone please explain to me how to set the HDMI (1 or 2) as the default input on the HT-C5500?

My HT is NOT in the same room where my TV is, so disconnecting from the player menu, the HT defaults to D/IN. My SAT. receiver is connected to HDMI1 and i have to get up and manually change to HDMI1.

Reply 1 : HT-C5500 Default INPUT

Zodiac_69,

The default input is usually the tuner. However, by powering on the HT-C5500 with Anynet+ enabled (HDMI required), the television will switch to that input (if it's already on), or power the TV and switch to that input automatically (if the power is off).

Reply 2 : HT-C5500 Default INPUT

Hi Samsung_HD_Tech

Sorry for the long break

My HT-C5500 is not in the same room as the TV(46C650).
I have two devices connected to the HT, SAT Receiver and XBox 360, both these devices are permanently on yet the HT still jumps to D/IN on power up.
I have had the occasion where it is on HDMI1, but it then change to D/IN and i have to go to the HT and manually change the source to HDMI1

I there any way i can have HDMI1 as the default?

Reply 3 : HT-C5500 Default INPUT

Zodiac_69,

Unfortunately, no. The tuner is the "always on" connection, and by default will usually be the input displayed when the unit is powered on. There's nothing that I'm aware of that will allow you to assign a default input other than the tuner.

I realize that this is probably not the answer you wanted, however that's the most accurate answer I have.

Build quality of new v.s old

I am wondering if this topic has been discussed (probably) but I am sure many people have an opinion on it especially Lenovo owners and probably people who have considered a recent Thinkpad.

I also hope that owners of the older IBM Thinkpads will comment.

I am interested in learning of the differences and reading opinions about the new laptops compared to the ones that were under IBM. I know Lenovo bought them but how much has the quality gone down or maybe I should say changed? Maybe the change is just different and it's still decent business quality? That's what I want to know and to hear about the perspectives.

I can read the reviews here and the one on Notebookcheck but it is owners who can give the real scoop. Also, comparisons and thoughts about how they compare to the older Thinkpads (think T4x and T6x series, even the more portable X6x series) will help.

I am considering T410 and T510 for a new laptop. They're expensive but as long as coupons are available, they can become affordable (for me).

Finally, Lenovo is offering LED displays with a somewhat high res, are offering a digital video input port and eSATA port. These might be minor preferences but are close to being deal breakers if they are not there. While I can compromise on some, if hey are all there, then for me, the laptop becomes a contender. Thinkpads are known for being quality business machines but I would like to know how they are now - how much has the integrity of their hardware construction changed?

Thanks for any answers and comments!

Reply 1 : Build quality of new v.s old

Build quality is something that's discovered over time. The Core i machines are still pretty new. I don't know that you could say much about them durability wise. The newer machines I've seen have been very good, but I have not seen any of the Core i machines.

There's been good/bad for both the older and newer machines. The X200 is better than the X6x quality wise. When I wrote the X61 review for NBR I was amazed at how flexy the lid was. The T4x machines you referred were slim and sexy, but had rigidity issues due to the slimness. The T60 that replaced it was a much better machine in most ways, though a little thicker. The Tx00/Rx00 are solid, but the keyboard replacement was an accident waiting to happen.

Honestly, I think the best you can say is the quality yings and yangs over the years. You don't know until its time has past. Sometimes you'll buy a cheapie notebook and it'll last for a long time while others you drop a wad and it's nothing but trouble. Sometimes you just got to make a leap of faith and pray for the best.

If you know how to work the system like with coupons, you can get a ThinkPad for less than a notebook at BestBuy et al. Plus it'll offer you better quality and support. Lenovo has dropped the prices of ThinkPads by a 1/3 or more all while in my opinion retaining very good quality, which is a pretty impressive feat in my opinion.

Reply 2 : Build quality of new v.s old

Thanks for the comments, ZaZ! It helps in my comparisons. I am trying to determine overall quality and comparing to Dell, Asus and Sony laptops. I guess more the first two since they at least have 'business divisions.'

Reply 3 : Build quality of new v.s old

ZaZ reviewed the X61s with an ultralight LCD/lid. The ultralight lid is thinner and flexes more than the standard X61 lid. I haven't heard of any systemic issues with it or with X61/X61s build quality.

I think the more significant quality variations occur model vs model, or early in a model's life vs later, as opposed to IBM vs Lenovo.

Reply 4 : Build quality of new v.s old

Dell's consumer line laptops are not that good, then again i doubt that any consumer line laptops are of the same level of quality as the Business laptops. Dell Latitude laptop are okay, but their design changes all the time, if you don't have the Dell label on it, no one would know it is a dell laptop. There is no consistency in their design. Quality wise they are on par with Thinkpads in most areas, apart from the heatsink.

ASUS laptops are cheap, most of their laptops are ugly since these no visual consistency in design (just lot of unnecessary stickers and ugly plastics). Price is the main attraction towards ASUS laptop, otherwise people would just buy the Alienware for their game machines. (One could argue that the Lambo version of ASUS is really good, but the price is really expensive too).

Sony use to make quality laptops, but in the recent years, their laptop quality declined dramatically (this is across all their product line). IMHO their laptop is overpriced, and design wise it is better than most generic consumer laptops, but nothing that special.

Lenovo's Thinkpad still is the best, due to it staying true to its design element (probably have to do with the fact that Lenovo still use the same designer that IBM used for their laptop design. i.e. David Hill).

-Quality wise, Lenovo Thinkpads are better than IBM Thinkpads, due to the existence of the internal magnesium rollcage.

-Fit and finish wise, Lenovo Thinkpad's T and R series is not as good as the IBM T and R series, they are slightly bigger gaps in certain areas. But given how much cheaper the Lenovo Thinkpads compared to IBM Thinkpads was, i think this point is forgiven.

Starting from the T400, T500, R400, R500, X200, etc. Lenovo have changed the keyboard's backing plate from solid pate to perforated plate design, which according to Lenovo was done to save weight.

The perforated keyboard plate lacks the structural rigidity of the solid plate design, so in areas where there is lack of support i.e. around the upper left area, there is more flex than compared to the solid backplate keyboard.

For people whom don't use Thinkpads that much or never extensively used previous generations of the Thinkpads, they would usually not notice this problem. But for people whom use a lot of Thinkpads or punch the keys on their keyboard very hard, then there is discernible differences to be noticed.

Lenovo addressed this problem by either sending out the old solid plate keyboards and later adding backing plate on the upper left side of the laptop chassis (on selected laptop models).

Oh! How would I know if my R400 has the reworked keyboard or the old one? As of now, I find that my keyboard clicks a bit more than normal (as compared to an Acer 5920 and to a Sony Vaio). I can't feel any flex at all and the keyboard is (touchwood!) surprisingly responsive.

Reply 8 : Build quality of new v.s old

If your R400 keyboard suits you, why does it matter whether it's the old or new style?

To find out, remove it, flip it over and see whether the backing is perforated or not.

Sometimes there is no way to address the question of "why" aside from asserting it as being an expression of an innate curiosity. And, thanks for the answer.

Black Line across Samsung 50" Plasma has appeared?

Hey, sorry if this has already been posted and answered, but i am new lol.

The other day my tv (above) has just received a small thin black line at the top of it going from 1 side to the other.

I've searched a bit on Google and noticed that other brands of TV have had this issue aswell.

I've tried switching the TV off from the mains, resetting the TV settings etc. But it has still appeared on all outputs.

Is there a solution to make it go away? Thanks guys/girls.

Reply 1 : Black Line across Samsung 50" Plasma has appeared?

I have the same problem with my TV. I am 5 months out of my warranty and can not get any help from Samsung. Looks like this is an ongoing problem even though they tell me they have never heard of this.

Reply 2 : Black Line across Samsung 50" Plasma has appeared?

Nathv,

I've not heard much on this, although there could be several causes. Unfortunately, without inspecting the unit, it's difficult to determine what the issue could be.

Is it happening on all inputs?

Regardless, you might consider setting up a service if you're still within the warranty to have your unit inspected.

I have the same problem. Thin black line right through the middle of the screen. I want to know if it can be fixed or if I need to find a new manufacturer for my next purchase. I am interested to see the responses for this thread.

i have 42" C450 with black line going top to bottom 2/3 on the right side of the screen.
what did you end up doing?

thanks,

Reply 5 : Black Line across Samsung 50" Plasma has appeared?

Sorry, I'm late to the party, but despite it being a difficult task, do NOT go with Samsung for any future purchases.

I had a problem with my 5 year old 50" DLP set. I contacted them knowing full well it was out of warranty, but after two calls, three emails, and one snail mail letter, they gave me no help whatsoever. Not even a "Here's who to contact for service" response.

I now have a 50" plasma with the black line issue, but LG has been VERY helpful so far. We'll see how it plays out, but customer service matters.

Good luck to both of us!

Reply 6 : Black Line across Samsung 50" Plasma has appeared?

...PN50B850Y1F - it started out as one thin black line about 2/3rds of the way down the screen, but then a couple weeks later, a second line appeared.

Thought I would check in with consumers that experienced same issues prior to starting what could be a long, drawn out, non value-add process of contacting customer service.

Has anyone experienced success thus far?

Reply 7 : Black Line across Samsung 50" Plasma has appeared?

i had to replace mine to a brand new one. a technician came to my place and offered to fix it. i refused and insisted on getting a new TV, and i did. so far so good. good luck.

Reply 8 : Black Line across Samsung 50" Plasma has appeared?

This just happened to my set today. A thin horizontal line (looks like an entire row of burned out pixels) has appeared about 8 inches from the top. Shows up regardless of the input device...

I bought it from Best Buy (no extended warranty) in May 2009, so it is no longer under warranty. I submitted a repair ticket with Samsung, I'm curious to know what it will cost to get it fixed.

I am also not impressed with the Samsung brand anymore, I had a computer monitor that was less than 18 months old burn out recently. Very disappointing - I think they're one of the better brands when it comes to picture quality; but, I don't care how good the picture looks when lines start appearing across the set...

Has anyone that has had this problem had it fixed outside the warranty? If so, how much did it cost?

Reply 9 : Black Line across Samsung 50" Plasma has appeared?

Just this evening another black line has appeared on my Samsung 50" plasma. As I mentioned before, my set is out of warranty. Checked with HSBC (bank that provides Best Buy's credit card) to see if they offer an extended warranty... no such luck. If I had only used my Visa or Mastercard I would have had an full year extension on the warranty.

I contacted a Samsung certified repair shop and described the problem. I was told that it would be $600-$800 to repair the set - which is about the cost to buy the exact same TV brand new.

Needless to say, I will NEVER buy another Samsung product again.

Reply 10 : Black Line across Samsung 50" Plasma has appeared?

Wow, just gets better and better... Tonight, a new thin horizontal black line has appeared between the other two lines I've mentioned in this post earlier. My Samsung PN50B550 is obviously burning out.

Are Samsung HDTVs any good? Hell no. Are Samsung products in general any good? I'm starting to think no, considering I've had a Samsung phone, Samsung LCD monitor and other Samsung electronic merchandise burn out on me in the last couple years. Like others have stated on other forums, I'm hoping for a consumer suit against Samsung. Pretty sad that their stuff doesn't last more than a year....

Lenovo Canada X120e Shipping Woes

I've been posting about this problem in several different threads, so information has been rather scattered. So thought I'd open this new thread on this specific issue.

I'm amongst one of those who ordered an X120e in Canada and my shipping date has been constantly being pushed back, and the shipping dates are also a damn mess. Some who ordered later are getting earlier estimates, whereas others who ordered earlier are getting pushed to much later. In my case I was given 3 different dates, 21st, 26th, and April 12th. Some calling in are getting random dates as well, a different answer just by calling in a day after.

The reasons also vary as well, ranging from CPU configuration issues to Bluetooth problems.

Frankly, I'm very disappointed. I just ordered a T410 for a friend about a few weeks ago before my own, and that one came just fine, nowhere as bad as this one.

I'm really on the fence to cancel this, but I really wanted this machine to move back to a Thinkpad.

Reply 1 : Lenovo Canada X120e Shipping Woes

I ordered mine on day 1, when teh E-350 upgrade was free. Got it in 9 days. No bluetooth.

I guess I will simply return it as soon as I get it, there is a limit to laughing in the face of customers. I will never buy anything Lenovo again and I strongly encourage everyone to do the same.

Does anyone know if I will have to pay restocking fees when I return the laptop, anyone had a return experience?

So this morning, as I had time to think about it over the weekend, I phoned up to cancel. I first asked for an updated and this guy tells me, it is now 3/20. So I told him, I am tired of delayed shipping and a csr telling me there is a problem with the cpu configuration that I want to cancel and go elsewhere. He says no problem,, then goes, I can help you, if you dont get the bluetooth option and cancel this order, I might get it sooner than 3/20.. I did byte my tongue, rather than loosing it and told him, see "this is what I am talking about, you have the order in front of you and no where did i order the bluetooth option, Just please cancel this order"....

These things are just bad omens for me, when it comes to pc stuff. First i have heard cpu issues/configuration, then on other boards, reports of extremely loud noise/stuttering and a melted speaker. So this laptop is not for me, if it takes forever to get the d*** thing, I could imagine, how long turnaround time would be on a repair.

SO there you go boys/gals, that is what is called OffShore Outsourcing, nobody has a clue, csr's poorly trained, language barrier, etc. I will be complaining because I waisted so much time waiting and the anticipation. Unless ppl voice their opinion, big companies will outsource like that. unless they keep loosing sales for those exact reasons.

So Lenovo lost my sale, and others who I could have persuaded will go elsewhere.

I have an older friend who is higher up in the IBM chain and I will be enlightening her on this whole fiasco.

Sad cuz I liked the deal and size, but suspecting h/w issues is enuf for me to steer away.

There's usually kinks in the system when you introduce a new system. You can wait or not. I don't know what calling often does to speed things up.

Fair enough, but can you explain why calling 3 times can result in 3 different estimated ship dates?

I just emailed them again, and now I'm promised March 18.

Reply 5 : Lenovo Canada X120e Shipping Woes

I'm in the same boat as you. I had to cancel my first order, because my order was delayed from the March 15th to April 12th due to the Bluetooth configuration problem so I had to make a new one without the module. The order status for the new one says March 18th for ship date, but I called them today and they weren't able to provide me a tracking number, because the item hasn't even been shipped. I highly doubt they'll be able to ship it in 4 days, so I expect them to miss the March 18th mark as well.

You probably get multiple answers because like you management hasn't clued the CSRs in either.

"Ship date" indicates the date that Lenovo generates a UPS label for the package, not the "delivery date," which is when it should be on your doorstep. Typically, you get the tracking number on or a day after the ship date (unless it ships earlier, which happened to both my orders with Lenovo). Delivery to California then takes approximately 1 week--may be slightly different for Canada.

Reply 8 : Lenovo Canada X120e Shipping Woes

I see, so the March 18th ship date is probably around the time they're are going to actually have the item packaged and shipped on their part. Since I made the new order on the 11th I'm guessing it takes them around a week to put the order together and do all the paperwork.

I guess it's going to be a longer wait than I expected.

Reply 9 : Lenovo Canada X120e Shipping Woes

That's a pretty typical cycle--my T500 took exactly 1 week to build and ship, and then 1 more week for UPS to get it through customs and deliver it. My X120e took exactly 2 weeks total as well.
